The ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division will embark on the legendary Rockingham Speedway on Saturday July 4th 2009. The Cherry Bomb 200 will consist of a 100 lap ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division race, along with a 100 lap Frank Kimmel Street Stock Series event. ASA Late Model Series President, Ron Varney, is thrilled about the opportunity for “America’s Premier Short Track Series” to visit the legendary oval in the sand hills of North Carolina. “I cannot put into words how excited I am to land an event at such a historic place,” said Varney. Rockingham Speedway is full of stock car racing history, having held its first stock car race in October of 1965.
The ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division brings together some of the most talented short track drivers in the country. Drew Brannon is running for the championship in both the ASA Late Model Series South Division and ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division. The 16 year old from Miami, Florida is currently leading the standings in both divisions. Brannon will be joined by young drivers and veterans alike at the one mile high banked oval on July 4th. The field will be full of outstanding drivers with different racing backgrounds. The different grooves around Rockingham Speedway, along with an excellent tire compound should produce a great race.
Earlier this spring, Hoosier held a tire test at Rockingham. Veteran Midwest racers Butch Miller and Bob Varney were chosen to participate in the test. Both agreed that the tire compound Hoosier chose for the upcoming race would be a good match for the 2,700 pound stock cars. “It was an excellent, excellent tire,” stated Butch Miller. “I am used to going to Rockingham with Goodyear’s in a Cup or Nationwide car and the very first lap you make out there is the fastest lap you run. With the Hoosier’s, they never dropped off.” Miller continued to say that the tires showed very little wear.
As far as the quality of racing at Rockingham Speedway for the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division, Miller believes there will be 100 laps of side by side racing, “I think we will see some great racing.” Bob Varney, who also participated in the tire test with Miller was astonished with the racing grooves at Rockingham, “There is grip all the way up to the wall at Rockingham,” exclaimed Varney, “I was up in the third groove and the car stuck.” Both Miller and Varney agree that the compound Hoosier has chosen for the Cherry Bomb 200 will produce side by side racing without slowing down over a long green run.
Be sure to come out to Rockingham Speedway on July 4th for 200 laps of side by side racing. Tickets are only $10.00 for adults and children 12 and under are admitted free with each adult ticket purchased. The ASA Late Model Series is gearing up for what is surely one of their biggest races so far in 2009, the “Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200” at Rockingham Speedway.
When you think of “The Rock” you remember names like, Pearson, Waltrip, Allison, Yarborough and Petty. Gone are the days of NASCAR and their stars, but new owner Andy Hillenburg is trying to keep the dream alive and help create new names to be a part of the Rockingham history.
On July 3rd and 4th for the first time in a long time, straight rail, offset late models will race at “The Rock”. Over 30 of the best late model drivers will compete in the first, of what we hope is many, “Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200’s”.
“This will be a true test for our drivers; you have so much going on all at the same time, speed, the draft and the track itself. Rockingham is hard on tires but Hoosier has developed an awesome tire that will hold up for 50-60 laps, it’s almost too good” stated Series President Ron Varney.
“I expect this to be a highly competitive field of cars; we have current NASCAR Nationwide drivers Stephen Leicht and Scott Lagasse along with former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year Willie Allen already signed up. Plus current ASA Late Model Series stars Drew Brannon, Brian Blum and Brandon Johnson.
Also on tap for the race weekend are the Frank Kimmel Street Stock Series, schedule for 100 laps. Tickets for the Cherry Bomb 200 are available at the speedway ticket office. July 2, 2009 – SS Green Light Racing PR
On Saturday July 4th the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division will celebrate our countries birthday with a visit to the famed Rockingham Speedway in Rockingham South Carolina. It will be the second time current point’s leader Drew Brannon has raced the historic facility that opened in 1965.
Brannon’s first visit to Rockingham dates back to 2003 when he was racing karts. Drew scored two poles and two-second place finishes in separate divisions in his first race at the Rock. This weekend, Brannon and close to thirty other ASA Late Model competitors are expected on the high-banked one-mile D-shaped speedway for the “Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200.”
Brannon is hoping for results on Saturday similar to his first visit in the karts rather than last months practice session at Rockingham where he blew the motor in his ASI Limited Chevy. “We blew the block right out of the car and that was really scary,” he said. “I wasn’t able to keep the car [going] straight. Luckily, I didn’t hit anything.”
“That test wasn’t the best for us, but we didn’t bring our best stuff ether. In fact we were lucky to leave with the car in one piece. I’m confident that Butch and the SS Green Light guys will have our ASI Limited Chevy ready for this weekend,” Brannon added.
Brannon currently holds a 44-point advantage over Brian Campbell in the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division standings by winning at Milwaukee in May and finishing second to Campbell at ORP on June 13th. Drew has led nearly three-quarters of the laps in the first two Challenge Series events.
Three-time ASA National Champion Butch Miller will call the shots on Brannon’s SS Green Light Racing No. 08. Miller is ready to get back to the track after a three-week break, “There has been a lot going on at the SS Green Light shop. We have been working on a second Port City car and trying to make sure we have our primary just right for Drew this weekend. I can’t say enough about how hard Troy and the guys in the shop have been working so we are prepared for this race.”
Drew’s thoughts on Rockingham Speedway: “It was a long time ago when we went to Rockingham with the karts; they were still racing the Cup Series at the time. There is an awful lot of history at the Rock and if we are fortunate enough, it would be an honor to win at on the same track as David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty and Rusty Wallace each won at many times. I’m really looking forward to the race. It’s very fast and I think we will put on a great show for the fans.”
The ASA Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200 takes place on Saturday July 4th the 200-lap race beginning at 10:00 AM. There will be a half-hour break at the mid-point of the event. Practice and qualifying for the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division competitors is Friday July 3rd.

A full field of cars including many local drivers is expected to take to this tight bull ring and if past shows are any indications this should be another great event.
“Get your tickets and show up early to get a good seat, we are expecting another big crowd and as always we will hold an autograph session for all the fans and give them an opportunity to meet all our drivers. This really is a showcase event for the ASA Late Model Series stated Series President Ron Varney.

Brandon Johnson (93) had the top speed in practice last Monday for the Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200 at the Rockingham Speedway.
The legend of Rockingham Speedway continues to grow as new drivers find out the myth is true.
Brandon Johnson, from Tampa, Fla., heard how tough it can be for a driver at “The Rock” before joining eight other drivers Monday for a practice session for the Cherry Bomb 200 on July 4.
“It’s like Bristol (Motor Speedway) on steroids,” Johnson said. “At Bristol, the corners are smoother. Here, it’s really tough. With the (shocks) package we run here, you get beat up, it’s really rough.”
Despite Johnson’s comments about the track, he was able to post the fastest time in either the morning or afternoon sessions at 25.170 seconds or 147.604 miles per hour. In the earlier session, Johnson had a speed of 135.507 MPH.
“The main thing is we changed the gears,” Johnson said. “We are using a new motor this week. In the first session, we were just trying to shake the car down.”
The Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200 is a special double header race featuring the Kimmel Street Stock Series and the ASA Late Model Series.
The ASA Late Model Series portion of the 200 will include 100 laps of racing for “America’s Premier Short Track Series.” The ASA Late Model Series uses a crate engine, coil over shocks with a fiberglass body on the 2,700 pounds cars.
